Figure 3 -Two-dimensional profile of anomalous sonic velocity based on 26 well logs along a 110 mile long east-west traverse across the southern Powder River Basin, Wyoming. This profile illustrates a classic velocity field for Rocky Mountain Laramide Basins. The anomalous velocities in the basin center are slow and fall significantly below a typical regional velocity-depth gradient for this portion of the Powder River Basin. For purposes of illustration and discussion the anomalously slow velocities are designated as negative anomalies. The red domains are > 2000 m/sec slower than would be predicted by a typical velocity-depth gradient.
